RHYTHM GURU

An emergent PvP rhythm game where one player creates a beat and the other has to follow. Each round increases BPM and the role of the RHYTHM GURU, the one who creates the beat, is randomized, so you always have to pay attention to the beat!

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS:
Create a game that allows for emergent gameplay to happen.

GENRE:
Rhythm

TEAM:
Solo

DURATION:
4 Weeks

PROGRAMS USED:
Unity

DESIGN

In order to start, I had to understand how traditional rhythm games function.

From here, I was able to identify the elements of a rhythm game that make them what they are.

Then, I proceeded to concept the following:

Basic explanation of the concept.
Switch moment, identifying the gameplay loop, and arguing how this concept is emergent.

Unfortunately, corresponding the concept with the prototype exactly was difficult, but I had many testers who overall enjoyed the competitive multiplayer and creative aspects despite not having the randomization.

For future iteration, I would obviously like to implement the randomization of roles for more dynamic gameplay. In addition, since this is a music-focused game, there could be various ways to experiment with sounds in terms of instruments and musical genres. This would allow players to get more creative with making music rather than just competing alongside a metronome.
